ABSTRACT:
Traditional assessment models in higher education often prioritize content recall, failing to measure the complex, adaptive competencies, such as metacognition and cultural competence, essential for future educators and global citizens. This study documents the implementation of process-oriented portfolio assessment within a Language and Cultures teacher education program in Portugal. A two-year sequential explanatory mixed-methods study (2023/2024 to 2024/2025) involved one undergraduate cohort (N = 81) in English Culture and two graduate cohorts (N = 40) in Citizenship and Intercultural Education, totaling approximately 121 students. Descriptive quantitative analysis documented consistent performance patterns across cohorts when using structured, process-oriented rubrics. Qualitative analysis, focusing on reflective writing and critical thinking criteria, demonstrated significant metacognitive development and self-regulated learning, substantiated by student reflections and instructor observations. The findings affirm that portfolios can serve as an effective mechanism for fostering and documenting the process of learning rather than merely measuring its outcomes. The paper argues that integrating reflective portfolio assessment into teacher training curricula offers a pedagogically valuable alternative to traditional grading paradigms in higher education.

ABSTRACT:
Lesson Study (LS) is a methodology that enables student teachers (STs) to gain insights into their pupils’ learning processes during their practicum, thereby improving their instructional practices and supporting their professional learning throughout teacher education. However, “time” has emerged as a critical factor for the successful implementation of LS, particularly within the context of a one-year university-based initial teacher education program. To address this challenge, an integrated LS model was designed and implemented within the curriculum, specifically in relation to a thesis component and the practicum experience. This model was evaluated with a focus on professional learning, with the aim of fine-tuning the conditional input factors necessary for its effectiveness. The conceptual framework of Kager guided this evaluation, identifying input factors across three levels: compositional (team level), structural (LS process level), and contextual (organizational level). STs were consulted through questionnaires, individual interviews, and focus group discussions to explore which factors at these three levels either enhanced or hindered their professional learning. In addition, a document analysis of the thesis projects was conducted to triangulate the findings. The results indicate that the three levels interact and mutually influence each other. At the compositional level, interpersonal dynamics—such as trust, dysfunctional collaboration skills, and open communication—as well as limited teaching experience, prior knowledge, and group composition, were found to impede professional learning. At the structural level, STs reported time pressure due to the duration of the entire LS cycle, and some LS groups failed to make sufficient use of the provided tools and support, suggesting a limited understanding of LS. At the contextual level, misalignments in support systems created difficulties for STs in navigating and planning the LS process. This study sheds light on the complex interplay between team composition, contextual support, and structural guidance in the implementation of LS within a one-year university teacher education program. It further provides practical recommendations for improving the integration of LS into the curriculum in order to enhance STs’ professional learning and overall engagement with the LS process.

ABSTRACT:
In increasingly multicultural and multilingual societies, foreign language learning has become essential not only for communication but also for social cohesion and professional advancement. Distance education has emerged as a flexible and accessible solution, particularly for adults seeking to enhance their linguistic and intercultural competencies. This study explores the views of foreign language teachers regarding the role of distance education in promoting multilingualism, with a specific focus on culturally diverse border regions. Conducted in the Regional Unit of Evros, Greece, the research adopts a qualitative methodology based on semi-structured interviews with five language educators working in public and private education. Findings reveal that teachers recognize the potential of digital tools such as Massive Open Online Courses, machine translation applications (e.g., Google Translate, DeepL), and adaptive learning platforms to support multilingual learning, particularly when used as supplementary resources. However, concerns were raised about the lack of personalized feedback, limited interactivity, and the absence of culturally contextualized content on existing platforms. Teachers emphasized the importance of digital literacy, pedagogical training, and culturally inclusive design to ensure effective implementation. The study highlights the need for targeted support for educators in border regions and calls for more locally adapted digital resources that reflect linguistic diversity. These findings offer insights for policymakers and educational technology developers aiming to improve the quality and reach of multilingual education in remote or underserved areas.

ABSTRACT:
The effectiveness of inclusive education depends on the specific characteristics of the implementation context. Therefore, studying the role of teachers’ characteristics on inclusion remains a significant concern worldwide. This research investigated the difference between the attitudes of secondary school teachers in Bangladesh regarding including students with intellectual disabilities based on their characteristics. Following a quantitative approach, an adapted survey questionnaire was used. The study purposively determined the participation of 55 general and special education teachers from 8 schools. Positive attitudes toward inclusion are more prevalent among female teachers, special education teachers, those who have previously completed a course in special education, and those who have had fewer students with intellectual disabilities in their classrooms, according to the findings. No statistically significant difference was observed in the teachers’ attitudes according to their level of teaching experience and the subject matter they taught. Explanations of the findings are provided, along with recommendations.

ABSTRACT:
This research proposes a curriculum designed to promote the application of agile methodologies in classrooms. It identifies the key skills secondary school teachers need and categorizes them into three main areas: understanding the foundational concepts of agile methodologies, developing essential soft skills such as communication and teamwork, and enhancing digital proficiency. Guided by Gagné’s instructional design model, these competencies were systematically integrated into a well-structured curriculum with clearly defined modules and units. By focusing on these three areas – agile methodologies, transversal skills, and digital competences – the curriculum aims to help teachers embrace and apply agile principles in practical, meaningful ways. It supports teachers in actively integrating agile practices into their classrooms and equips them with tools to create dynamic, collaborative learning environments where students can develop important 21st-century skills, such as adaptability and problem-solving. By empowering teachers with these skills, the curriculum establishes a pathway to transform education, making it more responsive, student-centered, and prepared for the future. It bridges the gap between traditional teaching methods and the agile practices required in today’s rapidly evolving world, ensuring a smoother transition toward innovative and effective educational practices.

ABSTRACT:
This study explores the use of photovoice as a reflective practice tool for early childhood student teachers in a teacher preparation program. Reflective practice is crucial for professional growth, yet traditional journaling often feels disconnected from real-world experiences for student teachers. Photovoice, which encourages participants to capture and reflect on meaningful classroom moments through photography, offers an engaging alternative. This research investigates the aspects of student teaching that candidates find reflective, how their images express satisfaction and dissatisfaction, and how group discussions develop shared understanding. Using a constructivist framework, seven student teachers participated in a semester-long photovoice project. Data were collected through over 350 images, descriptions, and four group discussions. Findings reveal four key reflective themes: instructional resources, student engagement, classroom environment, and relationships. While photovoice enhanced critical reflection and community building, participants were hesitant to openly discuss negative experiences, reflecting challenges in developing self-assessment. The study concludes that photovoice holds significant promise for enriching reflective practice in teacher education by integrating visual analysis and group dialogue and recommends its inclusion in teacher preparation curricula as a strategy for fostering critical reflection and community building.

ABSTRACT:
This study examines the educational experiences of Chinese students amid China’s sociocultural evolution from Gemeinschaft (community with informal education, simple technology, rural residence) toward Gesellschaft (society with formal education, complex technology, urban residence, economic prosperity). Through qualitative interviews with 10 high school students (aged 15–16) in Wuxi, China, we investigated differences in teachers’ interpretations of help, student–teacher dynamics, and mental health support across these educational settings. Findings reveal that teachers’ cultural backgrounds more strongly influenced their perspectives on help than did institutional environments. Traditional schools maintained teacher-centered hierarchical structures reflecting collectivistic values, while international settings fostered student autonomy and more egalitarian teacher–student relationships aligned with individualistic principles. Though mental health awareness was similar across settings, international school teachers demonstrated greater concern for students’ overall well-being. Students in international programs initially experienced unique transition stresses but ultimately reported feeling more relaxed than their peers in traditional schools. These findings highlight the complex interplay between educational systems and cultural values in China’s evolving society while underscoring the need for enhanced mental health resources in Chinese schools.

ABSTRACT:
Professional conversations are significant in teacher education, yet policy-makers and practitioners differ in their understanding of what these involve. The purpose of this study was to identify and understand the critical elements of successful professional conversations, the elements that effectively contribute to critical reflection and evaluation of teaching practice. Insight is provided by 10 participants who took part in a discussion group, in-depth interviews, and written reflections. All participants are involved in professional conversations for a teacher education program in Wales, in their capacity as either a student teacher, practice tutor, or mentor. Findings highlight that some of the significant elements needed for an effective professional conversation include adequate preparation time for the conversation itself, knowledge of program requirements, and professional teaching standards, along with knowledge about the student teacher’s school context – these can all be described as “hard” inputs, whereas the “soft” inputs include effective listening and questioning skills and being able to offer a challenge to the student teacher. Similarly, outputs of professional conversations can also be recognized as “hard”: effective reflections contributing to progress against the professional teaching standards, and “soft”: collaborative working relationships that are honest and positive with two-way learning for the mentor and the student. It is concluded that the softer skills of questioning and understanding the student teacher’s expectations must be developed effectively for professional conversations in teacher education to have a positive impact on all those involved.

Use of Working Time in the Teaching Profession in Spain: The Cases of Galicia and the Basque Country

ABSTRACT:
Within the framework of studies on teacher professionalization, this study aims to analyze and compare the degree of professional dedication among non-university teachers in two autonomous communities of Spain: Galicia and the Basque Country. Data were collected through a questionnaire—previously validated by external experts—comprising 18 items grouped into four domains (1–5 school-teacher domain, 6–10 technical-political domain, 11–14 teacher training domain, and 15–18 scientific-academic domain). A total of 1,318 nonuniversity teachers responded to the survey (742 from Galicia and 576 from the Basque Country). Inferential analyses were conducted using the nonparametric Mann–Whitney U test for independent samples, and various Chi-Square Automatic Interaction Detector (CHAID) classification trees were generated to identify patterns in teachers’ work dedication. The results reveal highly similar work dedication patterns in both regions, with only minor differences observed in the scientific-academic domain. Overall, the findings suggest a fragmented structure of the educational field with a hierarchical distribution of tasks, although a widespread, emerging involvement of teachers in nontraditional activities—beyond the school and classroom settings—is also evident. Among other conclusions, the study emphasizes the benefits of teachers expanding their roles outside of school.

ABSTRACT:
ver the past decade, the growth in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is reshaping and changing how we interact, learn, and work and is likely to bring ongoing change in the future. However, current educational understandings, frameworks, and models concerning digital technologies and digital literacies are remaining relatively static and hierarchical and do not adequately accommodate GenAI’s unique learning capabilities, creative potential, and agency. In this conceptual article, we use critical dialogic inquiry and employ ecological thinking using the notion of symbiosis and posthuman perspectives to explore and speculate about the nature of GenAI and its potential impact on educators and learners. We offer a new way of conceptualizing human relationships with GenAI, which we call “symbi(AI)tic understandings.” Symbi(AI)tic understandings acknowledge the evolving and contextual relationships between partners: from balanced mutualism to one-sided commensalism to potentially harmful parasitism. Thus, we position human–GenAI relationships as part of change futures in which there are complex associations between technology and human endeavor. These understandings aim to foster more nuanced ways of being with and thinking about technology: ways which are vital for educators and learners as they transition into an era of education with AI.

ABSTRACT:
When teachers are confident in their ability to teach mathematics and science, it can inspire students to have confidence in their own abilities. Students are more likely to engage with and enjoy these subjects when they see their teacher’s interest and belief in the material. This study aimed at exploring teachers’ confidence of teaching mathematics and science as result of continuous professional development by the African Institute for Mathematical Science (AIMS Rwanda) through its Teacher Training Program (AIMS-TTP). It employed an ex post facto research design targeting 351 secondary school teachers. The findings revealed a positive and significant relationship (p < 0.05) between AIMS-TTP interventions and teachers’ confidence to teach mathematics and science. Besides, linear regression model indicated that the dependent variable Teachers’ Confidence to teach mathematics and science was regressed on predicting variables of improved capacity to plan, adapting teaching to the level of learners, Information Communication Technology (ICT) integrated in teaching and learning; learning from peers; addressing cross-cutting issues; effective implementation of the competence-based curriculum; and the application of bloom’s taxonomy. The independent variables significantly predict teachers’ confidence of teaching mathematics and science, F (7, 326) = 183.843, p < 0.001, which indicates that the factors under study have a significant impact on teachers’ confidence of teaching mathematics and science. Moreover, the findings (Adjusted R2 = 0.822, F (8, 342) = 197.055, p = 0.000 p < 0.05) indicated that 82.2% of the variance in improved teachers’ attitude in teaching mathematics and science evidences a significant influence on the total variance. Our research suggests that policymakers should consider developing and endorsing training on innovative teaching and learning methods to boost teachers’ confidence and attitude when it comes to instructing mathematics and science at basic levels. Trainings should also be extended to Technical Secondary School STEM teachers.

ABSTRACT:
This paper advocates the relevance of ethnography as a methodology for researching preservice teacher education. The research underpinning this paper demonstrates the importance and relevance of the ethnographic imagination for examining the formation and development of preservice teacher identity, offering a means of capturing the lived experience of learning to teach from the perspective of those entering the profession. The experience of learning to teach on three graduate-level teacher education pathways in the South of England is explored using ethnographic methods. The yearlong immersion in three different research sites and subsequent thematic analysis of the generated data gives insight into the formation of the teacher identity, foregrounding the importance of place in the experiential journey of the preservice teacher. The comprehensive data generated from this study give unique insight into how ethnographic practices can reveal the developmental process of teacher identity and have relevance for teacher educators and researchers internationally.
